Apple and the iMac computer, Volkswagon and the Beetle—some companies live to innovate. Nike, synonymous with innovation since the mid-70s, marks the millennium with a whole new way of thinking about footwear design: The Air Presto, a shoe that adapts to many different foot types and incorporates cross-cultural styling with amazing comfort.

Unique to the Presto is the multi-grooved outsole specifically engineered to feel like an extension of your foot. Like the fatty pads on the bottom of your foot, the Prestos’ split heel design separates the lateral aspect of the midsole. The result is a smoother transition from heel strike to the toes. Like its predecessors the Sock Racer and Air Huarache, the Presto offers the same stretchy uppersand compression fit that made its ancestors a favorite with runners of all levels. But the Presto features a lighter material called "dynamic stretch mesh" that replaces the less breathable Neoprene fabric of the past.

Presto eliminates the boredom in the marketplace, a boredom that comes with a lack of individualism or customization in shoes. With its wide range of colors and prints, adds flavor to the already "fashion-forward" design. Most of shoes today have no individualism or customization; Presto is built with the individual in mind. Whether running a 10K or walking your neighborhood—be it Portland, Paris, Sydney or Singapore—Presto is a different shoe for everyone.Like the multi-cultural influences that drive music and fashion, the Nike vision of design attempts to stretch the boundaries of our senses.

The enhanced toe-spring and lowered collar heights are combined with stretchy upper materials to create an expandable fit system that is comfortable with or without socks. Presto comes in six sizes ranging from XXS - XL, and each is designed to accommodate up to five traditional half-sizes.

The origin of the Presto has many influences, but it comes down to one key theme. Nike built a shoe that you can look at and understand what it does. "My goal was to create a friend to the runners foot," said advanced product designer Tobie Hatfield. "Along the way we discovered that this design was adaptive to many different sizes of feet." On testing the product, everyone noted how 'comfy' the shoe was. Nike tested the concept on the ’98 Air Gauntlet and won the Popular Mechanics Award for new product design. More recently, the Nike team has evolved the design with a laceless version called the Air Kukini. The result of each evolution has been a greater understanding of the fit and function requirements for the next generation.
